PIXII Rangefinder Reviews
PIXII Rangefinder Reviews
From DearSusan:

"So, in conclusion, what is this Pixii? First, it is a real product that makes real images. Second, in a word, it is the M that Leica should have made [This is le-majest Part 2]. The current, digital M is just a digitized version of the film Ms. And gradually, almost grundgingly, Leica improve sensor and processor to newer standards. But it remains the 堵ood old M in so many ways. And, if people want something new from Leica, they are offered the SL, now SL2, which is basically nothing more -or less- than the Leica iteration -and in many ways a very classy interation- of the ubiquitous mirrorless full-frame autofocus camera. No rangefinder, no zone focusing, no small form factor and light weight, no light and compact glass. Total surrender, and in my opinion as a consultant, loss of company DNA."

LensRentals: Taking Apart the Canon EOS R5
LensRentals: Taking Apart the Canon EOS R5
@RCicala at LensRentals.com just published the Canon EOS R5 Mirrorless tear-down. (link)

Here is his conclusion:

"So What Did We Learn Today?
Not much that was surprising. What with the IBIS unit and a more intense chipset, the camera is pretty thoroughly filled up, there are lots of parts and not much air. There痴 a new weather sealing method in the lower 2/3 of the camera that seems to give a really, really tight seal. And there we some pretty new flexes which matters not a tiny bit to anyone but me.

The IBIS unit is very compact but well-engineered. There are no tab connections that might be weak points; the sensor is connected to a flat plate around all its edges. That doesn稚 mean there can稚 be problems, of course, this is a new build, so we won稚 know for a year or so.

There seem to be two separate heat sinks, one under the voltage board, another between the main PCB and the sensor assembly, with thermal pads to direct heat to each. At least one of them connects to the tripod plate, which might provide a secondary sink. This is a lot of heat sink compared to most photo cameras, but not even a fraction of what we see in a video camera. What I can稚 tell from this is how that heat then gets out of the camera. It痴 sure not air circulation.

Given how tightly sealed things are, I知 curious as to where the heat goes to get out of the camera; some further investigation is required there. A lot of people are talking about how the heat should move around inside the camera, slapping some thermal paste around, and doing things to manipulate the heat cut offs.

I知 a simple person. All I can think of is, ow does the heat get out of the camera? Sure it goes into the metal sinks, but once they heat up, then where? In a small photo camera, there痴 not a lot of ventilation/convection current to get let the heat out. This camera is better sealed than most; I doubt there痴 very much ventilation at all.

Somebody should look into that."

FM 2002 Nostalgia Review: Canon 1DS, the first full frame body
FM Nostalgia Review 2002: 11MP Canon 1DS, the first Canon full frame body
I can't believe it's already been 18 years since Canon released their first full frame sensor body: The Canon EOS-1DS.

I remember driving out to Death Valley National Park as one of the first photographers invited to review it.

Time flies when you're having fun! It's amazing how things changed since then.

"For anyone seeking something new when they pick up the 1Ds, don't be fooled by the looks alone. You could quickly be deceived into thinking that nothing has changed from the Canon EOS 1D to EOS 1Ds. The outer body (except for the logo) is virtually the same. It also seems to have the same weight and exterior design. You've got to hold the viewfinder up to your eyes to realize that the world comes in a full frame size and now Canon has finally delivered the tool you need to capture it."

LensRentals: The Fujifilm GFX 100 vs Salt Water Teardown
LensRentals: The Fujifilm GFX 100 vs Salt Water Teardown
The Fujifilm GFX 100 vs Salt Water Teardown

Here are a few excerpts from the article:

"So today is 摘very Dark Cloud Has a Silver Lining Day. The dark cloud involves a Fujinon GFX100 medium format camera that went out on rental, got used in a dive housing, and 壯uddenly died for no reason.
Except on further investigation, well, maybe it got a little wet, but just a bit, but it was working for a while after it got wet. Alas (our editor said my writing痴 too casual, so I thought throwing an las in would class things up a bit), Fuji Service said ?pair not possible? insurance claims were paid, it got sent over to repair to see if there were any salvageable parts."

"We learned that salt and water are bad for cameras. Really bad. Even if it痴 just a little bit.

And we learned if you invest $10k in a GFX100, you should probably keep it dry. I致e seen a lot of claims that the GFX100 does well in the rain, and it may, because it has a big overriding top and rainwater is freshwater. But did you notice all those weather resisting barriers and gaskets in the teardown? Yeah, me neither. I did notice some wide-open areas around the command dials you could shine a light through, and pour water in if water happened to be around."

Review: Laowa 11mm f/4.5 FF-RL
Review: Laowa 11mm f/4.5 FF-RL
@BastianK at Phillipreeve.net just posted a review on the just released Laowa 11mm f/4.5 lens. ($699)

Specifications:
  1. Diameter: 63.5 mm
  2. Field of view: 126? (diagonally)
  3. Length: 58 mm
  4. Weight: 254g
  5. Filter Diameter: 62 mm
  6. Number of Aperture Blades: 5 (straight)
  7. Elements/Groups: 14/10
  8. Close Focusing Distance: 0.19 m
  9. Maximum Magnification: 1:10
  10. Mount: Sony E, Leica M and Nikon Z

Here is an excerpt:

"This 11mm is the widest lens with a normal filter thread. This is a clear benefit over the Voigtlander 10mm 5.6, 12mm 5.6 and the Laowa 9mm 5.6 as it makes using a polarizer (which I used for many of the sample images) easy and convenient, but unfortunately the non removable lens hood makes using a generic filter system impossible.

The overall optical performance is similar to the Laowa 9mm 5.6 and the Voigtlander 12mm 5.6 at shared apertures and slightly better than Voigtlander 10mm 5.6, compared to the Voigtlander lenses you are not getting electronic contacts and exif readout here though.

All in all a very solid ultra wide angle lens and an interesting alternative to Voigtlander痴 10mm and 12mm offerings"
